We kicked off the term with our Black History Enrichment Day. Each class covered a different icon and the girls got to move around the school learning all about these wonderful people.
To start us off is Lilan Bader, one of the first black women to join the RAF. The girls got to make paper aeroplanes with inspirational quotes as a representation of Lilian Bader’s service to the RAF.
Next, we have the very talented late Poet- Benjamin Zephaniah. The girls learned all about him and had a chance to create their very own poetry. Another very influential person was the activist Wangari Maathai who founded the Green Belt Movement in 1977.
As we end Black History Month, here are the rest of the black icons the girls have been introduced to on our Enrichment Day. Next up Olive Morris-Jamaican-born British-based community leader and activist in the feminist, black nationalist.
Fanny Eaton was a British-Jamaican woman who became famous in the 1800s as a model for artists in the Pre-Raphaelite art movement. The girls posed in the style of the paintings and practiced their tracing skills to create a portrait of Fanny.
Tom Jenkins, the first Black school teacher in Britain was another icon the girls got to find out about.#BlackHistoryMonthUK The girls were designing a Perseverance Medal.
Donna Fraser OBE, OLY, was another icon our girls got to learn about on our Enrichment Day. The girls enjoyed your video message and were thrilled to learn you came to @WjgsS The girls put their running skills to the test to mark Donna as a running athlete.
Our last icon for Black History Month is Dr. Shirley Thompson OBE, a composer and choreographer. One of her accomplishments was writing the music for the Women’s World Cup.
